You buy an awesome looking plant that you would really like to have as a beautification in your garden. Then, you purchase some soil and a pot and place it in your favorite spot to watch it grow and become even more sparkling. However, you forget that plants need the sun in order to feed themselves, only to find out that water is not enough once it suddenly dies.
Something like that could easily happen to your adsense ads or whatever advertising affiliates you may be using. You go into some fuss in order to set them up but forget that ads, like plants, need to be visible to the sun in order to prosper.
Ads Needs to Be Visible
If you are serious about using adsense advertisments or whatever other ads you choose for your site, you need to make them visible to the people. Choosing to place them somewhere where they are not really seen is not a good idea. You may be thinking: “‘Well, i don’t want to harass my visitor”. While that is a very nice thought and it has much importance, if you lay out the ads in a good manner you’re not only not disturbing the visitor but probably provide them some service.
Ads Should Look Like Content
Making your ads look like they are part of your content is definately the most important thing that you will ever need to do. In fact, if you do it properly, you will see a great increase on your income., most probably above 50% and that is because your clickthrough rates will increase.
We will now take a look at an example website and case study its adsense positioning, discussing what is wrong and what is right. I find it better to speak by example since this makes it much easier for people to follow and evaluate.
Is Technorati.com Doing it Right ?
Well, i know what you’re probably thinking. Technorati cannot be doing it wrong, can they? After all, they are one of the greatest websites on earth featuring lots of blog posts and driving huge amounts of traffic. However, they seem to be doing some things wrong. Let’s take a look at a screenshot from this website :
There are 4 very important mistakes that need to be fixed for technorati.
1. The Top Banner Should be Placed Right Below the Main Menu
The top banner look too much like an advertisment. You do not want to do that. Most people will look at that ad and just ignore it just because it directly says to them “I am an ad waiting to be clicked”. Moreover, it’s really separated from the content of the website. It’s the first thing that every visitor notices and learns to forget about.
Instead, it would be much better to put this ad right below the main menu. This way, it will look more like an integral part of the website and would be much more noticed by everyone. What’s even better is that people will click it more often if some valuable information appears as an advertisment.
2. The Right Placed Ad Should Not Have Any Borders
Borders are bad. Borders are very bad. They clearly indicate that what is inside them is an advertisment. Never, really never use borders to any of your ads.
3. Link Colors Should Blend in With The Website Link Colors
It is always best that your website links and advertisments are blue in color. That is because since the internet has risen, links tended to be blue and you will surely notice that most websites follow that pattern. However, if you decide, for instance, to turn your links color to red, you should do that for your ads too. The more blending you do the merrier.
4. Ad Description URLs Should Almost be Blended To The Background
Notice the little urls below each advertisment ? These should not be blended with the standard links color scheme of your website but rather be blended with the color of your background. Hence, as this website’s background color is white, these links color should be something like gray (probably #666 
)
Bonus Tip – Use The New Font Selection Option of Google Adsense
Google Adsense has provided a great new tool for webmasters. You can now change the font inside your ad blocks. Utilize that and make it the same as the the font that your website uses.
I really believe that if Technorati made these changes, their ads revenue would rise much. What is your view about it?

Great post! I agree with everything said. I believe what you set about technorati.com is a great guide and recommended by allot of web masters. My guess is that they have tested everything and found out what works best for them.
Interesting points you make. The only issue I can see is that you assume all sites are created equal. While you say borders are bad, for many sites this may be applicable, but not all. It is important for each site to test various configurations to determine what works for them.
Now technorati may not agree with what many have done with their adsense ads, but I’m sure that tested what works for them and have stuck with it. Maybe using borders and the placement of the top ad earns them the most.
I have also seen many who use AdSense say that blue links work the best. This has to do with the fact the when the Web first started out, most links were blue. Many people attribute links to be blue and may have a tendancy to want to click those links.
My apologies for rambling, just figured I’d give my thoughts. Good article and site, keep up the good work.
