Some time ago, I was reading a great article at problogger.net. I happen to be very interested in Darren Rowse’s writings and many times I also get new ideas from that important website. In case you happen not to be aware of it, Darren is a very well known webmaster who has created an incredible resource on professional blogging and you’re highly adviced to read his blog regularly to secure that you get even more knowledge on the long road to successful websites.
In his featured post about 8 First Step SEO Tips For Bloggers, you will find a very nice introduction on how to search engine optimize your blog so that you get indexed by the main search engines and start getting increasing traffic. As I was reading this post, i was thinking that it would be nice to make some examples out of the 8 suggestions in order to clarify how they are used in practise. So, i decided to create this post and use it as a guide to show you how already successful bloggers go about following those steps.
1. Content Is King
This is one of the points that do not need much clarification. The FIRST and FOREMOST step to a website’s success is its worthy content. This is the primary goal that well known websites or blogs that earn money have already achieved. Remember that you cannot build much content overnight and you should really be patient and build more as days come and go. It will shortly add up and bring you more and more visitors via search engines. I think Darren himself said that his website has around 5,500 posts at this time. Of course, as everyone, he built on that and that is what you should aim to do too.
2. Anticipate What People Will be Searching For
Another great point by problogger. Remember that you are not writing for yourself, but your reader. Always watch out for what people are searching for and build on that. I’ve written an article describing how to get keywords that people search and rank high in the search engines for them using SEOBook, you may want to take a look at it.
3. Titles Titles Titles
I first got acquainted to the concept of great headlines by the copyblogger post of 10 headlines that surely work. Brian Clark is really an authority on copywriting and i’m sure that his ideas also influenced Darren Rowse. If well written, they are a great way to attract visitors to read your posts. However, to attract them, you need to have them visit your website first. Therefore, it’s important that you also take some time setting up you seo so that titles appear as html attribute at each page and also choose the appropriate words as Darren says. Notice how copyblogger and problogger craft their titles for visitors and search engines too and try to learn from them.
4. Keywords in Other Parts Of Your Post
This is called Keyword Density Technique. It is true that the more you appear a certain phrase inside your post, the more chances you have for it to be indexed at a good place in a search engine. However, do not overdo it. The best advice probably is just to write naturally what you want to write and keywords will most probably blend in. Notice, though that Darren uses a lot the word SEO at that post
You can see these advices being used at Darren’s very post and that is why it has great educational value.
5. Link To Your Own Posts
This is a very important part of your seo process. Be the one to give your own pages some value. Notice that it works like getting linked by other websites. If one of your posts that has a 4/10 PR for instance links to two other posts of your website, it gives them pagerank value too. Therefore, make sure that you find relevant content to link to whenever possible and if you have not done this for your previous posts, please do so after you read that post(and some others probably
).
6. Plugins
Especially if you use a wordpress or other known blog platform, you really need to take a look at plugins that will do the SEO work for you. This is very important and you should not neglect that. Moreover, be sure to write separate meta keywords and titles for each and every blog post that you make. It will pay you back, be certain for that. If you need to know of some nice seo related wordpress plugins, you may want to read this.
7. Readers Begat Readers
Ahh, the so called ‘avalanche’ effect. Darren describes it very vividly. It’s all about social proof. The more people know about you, the more people will visit your website. It’s like a 24/7 advertisment that runs for you while you are not present. This is why it pays to have lots of twitter followers, lots of facebook friends, interact with others, make online friends and generally have a versatile online presence.
8. My Hunch With SEO (Darren’s one and mine too)
I REALLY agree with Darren on this one. It has come to my attention too and i’ve also experienced the same with other sites that i’ve created in the past. I believe that what Darren says here could be a separate post easily and he definately has a point. SEO has certainly changes and it indeed seems that the past known techniques do not work as they did, mainly because google can probably use better algorithms, probably using Artificial Intelligence Agents too.
This is a great advantage to serious webmasters though. If you’re really serious about what you do, you should be glad that the garbage websites are going to be thrown away. Since you work for your website and produce quality content, you will be one of those who will harvest the deeds of this undergoing SEO changing process.
Remember: Whenever there is a change, there is opportunity.
To conclude, couldn’t this last sentence easily become a headline for a post to come, formed like:
“Warning: Whenever SEO changes so should bloggers”
I will probably have to elaborate till next time
