3 Reasons Why You Should Avoid Creating a Social Networking Website
Posted by Spyros Panagiotopoulos in General Website Creation Tips
Could there be a better way to create a successful and money making website ? After all, social networks are a trend these days and bring on much revenue to their webmasters. It seems as if they present a wonderful opportunity for a new webmaster and many would certainly think that it would be great to create such a network as their first website attempt.
However, in reality, doing the latter is probably one of the worst decisions you could be making when starting your first website. Of course, if you manage to be successful in that area, you could be making much money. Nevertheless, doing so is really very difficult to a point that it should really worry you if you decide to do so.
1) Social Networks Need a Traffic Base to Evolve
What is more unattractive than visiting a social network that has only a couple of members ? Why would somebody want to join such a website ? Remember that people DO NOT CARE about your website but your offerings to them. If there is little action going on people will not participate in order to get more traffic for your website. This is something that you always have to do for yourself. On the contrary, if some socializing already happens, people would be far more tempted to join in order to have fun and meet people. Therefore, in order to build a successful website of that kind, you would need to ALREADY have established traffic, probably at another website that you have created. This way you can redirect them to your newly created social network and have much more chances of evolving it.
2) Social Networks DO NOT Offer Any Real Value
Let me make myself more clear on this one. Of course, when people come in at your network, they will create content that can eventually have some decent value and be nicely indexed by search engines. However, it’s the nature of such websites that they do not contain quality content. Who would visit a social network in order to learn CSS for instance ? Nobody. People would only visit because someone or something lead them to visit that website, they liked it, noticed some socializing already going on and decided to take part. However, when you first start having too few visitors you will be striving for content and you won’t really be having the opportunity to create competitive content unless you create a niche social network(which is highly recommended if you decide to create such). Mark this as a strong disadvantage because new websites need to provide content in order to have more people visiting them.
3) Social Networks Gain Low Advertisments Profit
Unless you create a niche social network that gets lots of traffic, you will most probably want to create a typical social network where all kinds of people chat and have fun. This is great, but there lies a very important problem. There is no targetted audience and this means that there are no known types of buyers. Everyone could be visiting a social network. It could be a student or even a father. Moreover, it seems that these websites are mostly attracting teens. Unluckily, they are the weakest chain when advertisments profit is considered. It’s always much better to have 100 targeted visitors than having 1000 visitors of any kind. Imagine that you have a website about women’s accessories. Your adsense ads are about women’s bags, lipsticks and more. If you get 1000 visitors per day, you already know that they are almost always women that look to know more about accessories. Therefore, they are great potential buyers and are VERY likely to click your adsense ads earning you money. On the contrary, what does a person visiting a social network look for ? Well, fun mostly. Unluckily for advertisers, fun is just not a good advertising opportunity. What’s even worse, most people visiting social networks also tend to just ignore ads since they present no real interest to them.
