seobook ads1 150x150 SEOBook A Free Marketeer Bringing Traffic to Your WebsiteIf you happen to have read some of my previous articles, you would have noticed that i always advice people to write content having readers and not search engines in mind. Therefore, it’s always better to have content that pleases humans and provides answers, rather than just doing keyword density tricks and such, in order to get better search engine placement.

However, it really pays to know how to select nice topics for your readers choosing the appropriate keywords. This is in fact kind of an art, but using some tools can really make this process easy for us.

Why do we need to locate such keywords?

The answer is pretty simple and that is: competition. Unless you’re creating content for a new niche or very original content that not many people have written about, you will be having lots of competitors online. Most of them tend to write about the same things mainly and thus there could be room to creating content with some keywords that can bring traffic to your website easier, due to their not overwhelming competition. If you’re a beginning website for a well known niche, it would be better to write a bit more about not well known subniches. For instance, if you have created a website about php programming, it may pay off better to write an article on comparing PHP to ruby, rather than PHP to ASP. It sounds that less people will search for the first topic, but if they do, you have a much better probability of them finding you just because the topic is not so “famous”.

How to locate competitive keywords?

First of all, i have to clarify what makes a competitive keyword. There are two factors that you have to take into consideration:

1) Hits Per Day
How many people do search for that every day?

2) Search Results
If you type that into a search engine, how many results do you get?

Whenever i do research for certain keywords, i like to follow a formula that i find particularly useful in determining the best. Since we are looking for keywords with few search results and lots of hits per day, a formula like (Hits/Search Results in millions) gives a nice value indicating the value of that keyword for our marketing purposes. I’ll illustrate after telling you more about the powerful SEOBook tool.

SEOBook – A marketeer at your browser

SEOBook is an incredible keyword research tool that makes finding important keywords very easy. When you open it as a webpage in your browser, you get to see an edit box that prompts you to enter a keyword. Always remember that phrases with 2,3 words or more have much better probability of less competition than one-word searches. Let’s suppose that we have a tennis related website. At the time of writing, the keyword “tennis” gives these results:

You can see that the keyword has an estimate of 5.785 searches per day on the main search engines. This means that if you were on the first page of the search engine results, you would most probably be very wealthy :) After determining the daily hits, i then take a look at the competition. It’s quite safe to do that with google since it is the best search engine you can find nowadays. Searching for the keyword “tennis” brings 199 MILLION results ! Quite too many huh? Not unexpected, since this is a very good keyword attracting lots of people.

I would now note the two variables, the searches per day and competition search results AND compute (Hits/Search Results in millions). For this example it is (5.785 / 199). The result is 29.07 and i’ll show you in a while how you can use it as a measurement to the best keywords.

Let’s now look at another keyword from the seobook search results. The phrase “tennis elbow” looks promising and could be a good way to attract uses that want to buy elbow protection equipment or such(it’s in fact a medical condition but it can help attract visitors whatsoever). The SEOBook yields 1257 searches per day and the google search gives back 1.740 Million results. The formula gives 1257/1.74 = 722.4. You can now draw a pretty safe conclusion that this one is a MUCH better keyword to use for your next article.

Instead of creating an article about tennis generally, you should aim for creating one explaining this condition and how it can be treated, maybe even promoting some products that do the job. If you do a rough ratio on these two keywords, you see that 722.4 / 29.07 = 24.85, which (again i say roughly) means that “tennis elbow” is 25 times easier to monetize rather than “tennis” alone. The latter may have more searches per day but has a great deal of competition.

To conclude, i think that SEOBook is a must for every webmaster that is serious on creating content that attracts traffic. Remember to balance it though. First think about the person visiting your site and only then adjust your content so that search engines can find it easier and bring you more traffic on the keywords.

Hope that helps a bit and why not go about creating your own excel files with keywords analysis for your site? :)
